Luna is a product of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically designed to assist users in information retrieval, analysis, and processing. Its architecture is based on advanced technologies that enable the resolution of complex tasks and the delivery of precise answers.

How does Luna work?

Luna processes documents and user inputs to provide precise and tailored answers. Acting as an orchestrator, Luna manages teams of specialized AI agents (experts) trained in diverse tasks and areas of expertise. At the core of these expert teams, Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal Foundation Models (FMs) are utilized.

One of Luna’s standout features is its integration of Intelligent Document Analysis (IDA), making it a powerful tool for processing documents of all types, including lengthy texts, forms, tables, or handwritten notes. In this area, Luna possesses internationally unique capabilities.

Processing a user request is carried out in a multi-step process:

  • A Reasoning Agent first analyzes the user request, plans and prioritizes necessary steps, selects suitable experts, and generates sub-tasks for them.
  • The experts execute the sub-tasks using tools (e.g., IDA, databases, web searches, code generation, etc.) and return their results to the Reasoning Agent.
  • Before the final output, the Reasoning Agent reviews the result, generates further sub-tasks if needed, and ensures proper execution by the experts.

The agents in this Luna demonstrator use Large Language Models (LLMs) provided by IONOS. At present, the main model in use is Llama 3.3, which is hosted in Germany by IONOS in compliance with GDPR requirements.

What is IDA?

IDA, or Intelligent Document Analysis, is a software suite developed by PLANET AI to enable automatic capture, extraction, and understanding of documents with high data quality outputs.

IDA offers extensive capabilities, including:

  • Reading distorted or low-quality scans
  • Reading difficult-to-decipher handwriting
  • Reading historical scripts (e.g., Gothic, Kurrent, Sütterlin)
  • Support for non-Latin scripts (e.g., Simplified Chinese, Arabic)
  • Automatic language detection
  • Interpreting table structures
  • Rule-free document classification
  • Extracting individual fields from documents like forms
  • LLM-based entity extraction from unstructured documents such as contracts

IDA utilizes PLANET AI’s patented Perception Matrix. Its intelligent text recognition is powered by AI systems trained with extensive textual datasets, such as those sourced from European cultural heritage archives containing approximately 11 billion pages of handwriting from 1500–1800 across Europe. This data was used for training as part of several major EU projects (e.g., Horizon 2020).

The technologies underlying IDA and Luna are continually developed in collaboration with research partners—such as the University of Rostock—in projects like “SPOC-AI.”
