SOUGWEN CHUNG

ECOLOGIES OF BECOMING, 2025

Sougwen 愫君 Chung (b. 1985) is a Chinese-Canadian artist and researcher, widely recognized as a pioneer in human-machine collaboration. Their practice explores the interplay between the mark made by hand and the mark made by machine as a way of reorienting relationships between living systems and technological forms.

Chung’s first solo exhibition in Germany, Ecologies of Becoming , reflects on a decade of artistic research and experimentation through a growing body of work created in collaboration with a bespoke, multi-generational robotic system: Drawing Operations Unit Generation, also known as D.O.U.G._1-6.  While a broader view of the work is on display at Kunstverein Heilbronn, here at IPAI SPACES, Chung’s experiments with the latest generations of D.O.U.G._ come into view. GENESIS Process and GENESIS Forms are shown as a combined video work in the foyer; and in turn, the living room displays an installation composed of the artist’s most recent works: CHRONOGLYPH I & II, and SPATIALITY film. und der Film SPATIALITY.

GENESIS Process and GENESIS Forms are part of ongoing research exploring the evolution of the drawn line and the robotic form. Through a bespoke drawing process in VR (Virtual Reality), spatially recorded gestures generate digital geometries that return to physical form – blending drawing, sculpture, and architecture. The artist’s movements, captured in 3D, unfold as a cinematic performance, where mark-making becomes a choreography bridging body, machine, and space.

Presented in close dialogue, CHRONOGLYPH I, CHRONOGLYPH II and SPATIALITY show the latest time-carvings that suspend intertwined sculptural gestures between the artist and robotic system, signifying a new turn in Chung’s ongoing exploration of human-machine collaboration.
